It turns out that Mark Wahlberg wasn't Michael Bay's first choice to be the lead role in Transformers 4. Maybe he had another part for him in mind, but Wahlberg's role was originally offered to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Johnson was doing a Q and A on Twitter today and answered a fan's question regarding a possibility of him being in Transformers. He replied, "Michael Bay offered me Transformers, but I was unavailable due to Hercules. Then Wahlberg was offered the role." Johnson's most recent movies include Michael Bay's Pain and Gain, which is in theaters now, and G.I. Joe Retaliation, a movie based off of Hasbro toys, just like the Transformers movies.
